The soviets sent dissidents to asylums. If they weren't crazy at first, "punitive psychology" was an attempt to make them insane. I think of that every time I see my mom in the "memory care" section of her nursing home. (She was fluent in French, English, Spanish, German, and Russian. Now it's hard to wiggle her toes.) It's obvious why society segragates people suffering from dementia and alzeimer's disease in units designed for their needs. It's efficient. But how can it be good for the patients? (Woman: That woman is so strange, who is she? Who is she talking to?")
