Supply and demand: unemployment is low. So employers have to pay more to attract and keep workers. Right? Wrong. Employers use their "monopsony" power to make it hard for people to switch jobs, even when there's a labor shortage. Pay me more or I quit. Where else can you go? 1/4 of all workers are covered by non-compete clauses that limit who they can work for. 17. No present or former employee of Burger Barn inc. may work for any other employer in the "burger-slipping sector." Low-wage bosses actually do this! No-poaching deals between companies also keep down your pay. They're illegal - but the government is asleep. We've got this game all figured out. What other economic system can they go to?
