Tom the Dancing Bug by Ruben Bolling Presents: News of the Times America's Consumption of Beef May Be Killing Cows This is a detective story without a neat solution. There is a heroine and a happy ending, but the mystery remains. When Dept. of Agriculture investigator Nora Reilly noticed an increased rate of CATTLE MORTALITY this summer, she suspected that a single factor may be behind it. Acting on a hunch, she began investigating the rate of BEEF CONSUMPTION and found that it had indeed risen, due to increased barbecuing. It was decided to go public immediately. Woman: Until we understand the cause of this outbreak of bovine deaths, we urge Americans to curtail all beef consumption. Reilly's theory was validated when cattle deaths in fact dropped along with beef consumption. Nora: But as beef consumption inches back up, we must find the element that connects these two factors. One hypothesis is that human ingestion of beef facilitates some sort of airborne bacteria harmful to cows. Reilly plans to visit a cattle farm to see firsthand what goes on there. Nora: I might see some clue that I've been missing! In the meantime, it is suggested that Americans stay away from beef and stick to food products safer to animals, such as pork, mutton, poultry and seafood. Nora: But not TUNA -- there's evidence that may kill dolphins.
