Tom the Dancing Bug by Ruben Bolling My Australopithecine Charley I'll never forget our family pet when I was a girl. His name was Charley, and he was a hominoid from the Pliocene epoch. I thought Charley was the greatest pet ever, and Mom treated him as part of the family... Charley: Pass down the creamed corn, willya? Mother: Isn't that CUTE? He thinks he's people! ...but his presence was toughest on my dad. Dad: You'd better not have used up all the hot water again. Charley: Hey, I'VE got a lot to shampoo, baldy. After all, an Australopithecine is quite an unusual pet. Dad: Who left all these dishes in the sink?! Mother: It's called SOAKING! Look into it. And Charley didn't even hide his somewhat flippant attitude. Charley: Yeah, I'm tellin' ya -- this PET thing is one sweet gig! Admittedly, Charley would sometimes cross the line... Dad: Who is THAT?! ...and why is she wearing my robe? Charley: I met her at the Orange Julius, she's into primitive guys -- what can I say? Continued...
