Homer the Reluctant Soul Homer: The Vesuvius eruption was apocalyptic and I assumed Duncan and all my sheep were...ash... I had lost everything... ...except my life. I had to push on. The Romans were master road builders. I didn't know where this road would lead, but I figured it was my best chance for survival, as inns cropped up on roads wherever water was available. Most inns were spartan and dangerous, but some grew into villages when blacksmiths and other services were added on. Vienna, Cologne and Budapest all began as simple inns along the Appian way. I was starving and completely exhausted. Then I saw luck was still with me... ? Homer: ...Or not. To be continued...
