FRAZZ BY JEF MALLETT Caulfield: Grog Fact # 1 People see it as this potent trash-can punch for pirates, but it's watered-down semi-booze invented by the royal navy. Grog Fact # 2 When the Brits discovered Jamaica, they discovered rum, which was safer to drink on an ocean voyage than water, but with certain well-known side effects. Grog Fact # 3 Admiral Edward Vernon figured out the obvious solution: diluting the rum made the water potable and sort of kept the sailors sober. Grog Fact # 4 Vernon liked to wear a cloak made of wool hybrid called grogram, which earned him the nickname "Old Grog," so there's that. Grog Fact # 5 The stuff tasted so bad sailors would cut it with lemon or lime juice, which is where "limey" comes from. Grog Fact # 6 That sour grog saved thousands of lives when the vitamin C in the lime juice thwarted the dreaded scurvy. Grog Fact # 7 If you've ever looked up the ingredients in daiquiri... Mrs. Olsen: Caulfield! Do you not listen to directions? Caulfield: Thus ended my grog-hound day report. Frazz: That's close.
