Makeup artist: I'm a huge fan of your early work, Mr. Doonesbury. Mike: Why, thank you. Makeup artist: You've held up nicely! You know, considering... Mike: Yeah. Well, the whole commune thing started out as a lark. We were just seven middle-class kids in off-campus housing...In the early days, we weren't drawn very well, so we didn't have much of an audience. But we had this energy, you know? We were a tight little band. Some of what went on was amazing. Like the time Zonker and the whole football squad showed up stoned and naked for a game... B.D.: AARGGH! Zonker: Anyone seen the ball? What? Did I say something? Player: Maybe. Let me think... Mike: Of course, that one never made it into print. Too outrageous for its day. This was before the culture had been trashed.
