Mike: I wish I knew how Reagan does it, Mark. When I use water, my hair just frizzes. I can't believe all the Germany gaffes will just roll off him, Mark. Mark: Why not? He's escaped the brunt of responsibility his whole career! Mike: Yeah, but I keep thinking people will start to see that. Mark: They already do, Mike. It just doesn't matter to them! People like the whole idea of Ronald Reagan, fo the unexamined life, far too much. To be critical of Reagan is to be critical of themselves. This need to "feel good about oneself" is a very basic yearning. Remember Secretariat, the great race horse that swept the triple crown in the early '70s? There was a telling incident that took place after the third race. A reporter asked a spectator what she thought of the horse. The woman replied that after Vietnam and Watergate, Secretariat had "restored her faith in mankind." Mike: And you think.. Mark: Right, Ronald Reagan is the Secretariat of the '80s.
