Man: Walter, exactly what kind of philosophy are we looking for here? Any guidelines? Mondale: Well, it has to be to the left of Reagan, and, preferably, to the right of Kennedy. Man: I see. Have you considered one of the new hybrid philosophies, a la Hart or Tsongas? Mondale: You mean, the New Realism? I don't know, they seem to be trying to have it both ways. I want some original insights. I'll be candid with you, Duane. With my liberal past discredited, I'm looking for a whole new system of political values. I don't need specifics yet, but I do need to know what I stand for. Can you help me? Man: Well, I'm not sure yet, Walter. How much are you willing to spend? Mondale: Whatever it takes. I'm not afraid of deficits.
