Voice: coming up: a conversation with interior secretary James Watt. Ready? Mark: Go away. Voice: Secretary Watt, has public opinion forced you to modify your proposals to open up federal lands to oil and mineral interests? Watt: Not at all. We still feel that the energy company operators have the same right to enjoy the land as environmental extremists. Voice: But couldn't such a policy permanently ruin environmentally sensitive lands for future generations? Watt: Well, as I said in my Senate testimony, I don't know how many future generations we can count on before the Lord returns. Voice: Could you be more specific, sir? Watt: Well, our latest projections put the second coming sometime during the 1984 fiscal year. Voice: That soon? Watt: Maybe sooner. Needless to say, we've got a lot of strip mining to do before then.
