Kirby: So Bunauvarilla got the Senate to pass a treaty? Zonker: Right! But there was a hitch, Kirby! In 1902, Panama was not an independent state, but a province of Colombia! The Colobmbians rejected the treaty as being blatantly larcenous! Roosevelt was furious! He called them everything from "jack rabbits" to "homicidal corruptionists"! Soon after, a plot was hatched! T.R. let it be known that if Panama were perchance to secede from Colombia, then the U.S. would recognize the new nation, and conclude a treaty with it! Kirby: Shades of sovereignty! Weren't the Panamanians excited? Zonker: A chance to have their own dictator? You bet!
