Duke: "Dear Carter: I resign. Satisfied?" Honey: You have to resign, sir? Why? Duke: Pro forma, Honey! Whenever a new party takes over the White House. All U.S. ambassadors have to tender their resignations. Honey: But what... what if he accepts it? What'll happen to you? Duke: If he accepts it, I become an unemployed old China hand, honey. Honey: But where will you go, sir? Duke: To Hong Kong, of course! Old China hands always go to Hong Kong. Where they sit around in shabby linen suits, drinking gin, and filing dispatches to stodgy London journals. Traditionally, the only thing that keeps the old China hand from going mad is his involvement with an enigmatic Indonesian cabaret singer with a heart-shaped face and luminous, green eyes.
