Cathy: My first finished freelance job...do I charge for how long it really took me...how long I think it should have taken me...or how long I think someone else will think it should have taken me??...Do I charge for the nine hours I sat there staring at it in an unproductive stupor...or charge for the 45 seconds while I was brushing my teeth when I had the big idea it's based on?? Do I count the pacing time? The thrashing-in-my-sleep time? Or the two hours I spent admiring the finished thing, during which I made six critical changes, which took one second each to implement?? The problem with being your own boss is that you're stuck with being your own billing department.
