Cathy: Call Joanne! RSVP promptly! It's so easy! It will take two seconds! Just pick up the phone and call Joanne! Uh, oh...I have to RSVP to Joanne but she moved, her number's unlisted, and I accidentally threw out the invitation. Sue knows Joanne's number, but I can't call Sue because I haven't returned her last four phone calls. Beth might know, but I haven't talked to Beth in two years, and to say "hello" is to obligate me to a three-hour catch-up conversation. Jeanne knows Joanne's number but I never ac-knowledged the birth of her son, who just celebrated his first birthday without a card, gift, or peep from me. Brenda knows someone who knows her number, but Brenda just broke up, and there's no way to talk to her without promising to get together for lunch and a rehash of her last seventy therapy sessions. I have forty-five pages of friends, and I can't ask ANY of them! THERE ISN'T ONE FRIEND I CAN CALL WITHOUT EX-CUSES, EXPLANA-TIONS, PROMISES, REMORSE AND GUILT, GUILT, GUILT!! People who need people are the crankiest people in the world.
