Benedict Cumberbatch Born in London on July 19, 1976, Benedict Cumberbatch is the son of actor Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, the actress who played Colonel Virginia Lake on the cult sci-fi series "UFO". Educated at exclusive schools, Benedict took a "gap year" to teach English in a Tibetan monastery, before studying drama in college. He received further training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Stage, TV and film roles soon followed, as did awards recognition. The lead in "Sherlock," the BBC's hugely popular update on the Sherlock Holmes tales, has brought him wide acclaim and Emmy award and Golden Globe nominations. Following roles in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "War Horse," he voiced Smaug and The Necromancer in "The Hobbit" alongside Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. Meanwhile, he continued to act on the London stage winning a Laurence Olivier award for "Frankenstein." Benedict will follow his villainous role in "Star Trek Into Darkness" by teaming with Brad Pitt, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender in "12 Years a Slave," Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in "August: Osage County," and portraying Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in "the Fifth Estate." His portrayal of Mathmetician Alan Turning in 2014's "The Imitation Game" earned him an Academy Award nomination. Recent TV work includes the showtime miniseries "Patrick Melrose" for which he received Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. Beginning with the release of "Doctor Strange" in 2016, he has played Stephen Strange in a number of movies in the marvel cinematic universe, in more to follow in 2021 and 2022.
