Amalaratina Zandile Dlamini was born in Los Angeles on October 21, 1995. Her father, actor composer and film producer, Dumisani Dlamini, returned to his native South Africa, and she was raised by her mother, a painter. At 16, Amalaratina taught herself to use the music production program garageband and began creating her own songs nad uploading them to soundcloud. She adopted the stage name Doja cat and landed a record deal when she was 17. She released her debut EP, "Purrr!" in late 2014, and began collaborating with other artists. Her success was tempered when a history of ill-advised tweets surfaced and spaked controversy- but she weathered the storm and has since apologized for her comments and deleted the offbending remarks. Her second album "Hot Pink" was released in late 2019. The fifth single off the album, "Say So" was a top-five-hit and quickly became the most-streamed song of 2020 by a female artist. In May of this year a remixed version of "Say So" featuring Nicki Minaj soared to the top of the U.S. charts, becoming the first No. 1 single for both. It was the first-ever female rap collaboration to top the Billboard Charts! Her debut album "Amala" released in 2018, contained the song "Mooo!" which became a viral sensation. The entirely self-produced video gained more than 5 million 70 million times. Her single "Candy" was hugely-popular on video-sharing platform TikTok.
