Born in Kansas City, Kansas on December 1, 1985, the daughter of a hotel lmaid mother and truck-driving Dad, Janelle Monae studied musical theater at New York's American Musical and Dramatic academy for a time before she relocated to Atlanta. She released a demo album, which she sold from the trunk of her car. While working at an office dept store. A cameo on Outkast's 2006 "Idewild" album led to her landing a record deal. Her 2010 album, "The Archandroid," cracked the top 20, and she was the featured artist on the 2011 chart-topping single "We Are Young" by fun. Her 2013 album "The Electric Lady" and 2018's "Dirty Computer" both hit the top 10, and she was collaborated on records with such artists as Eryka Badu, Miguel, Grimes, and Duran Duran. Away from music, she was carved out a successful career in movies. Having voiced a character in "R102" She earned great acclaim in the 2016 releases "Moonlight" and "Hidden Figures" subsequent credits included "Welcome To Harwen" and "Harriet" and voice roles in "Uglydolls" and "Lady And The Tramp" following the recent release "The Glorias" she is the lead in the upcoming horror movie "Antebellum." Later this year, she will follow the footsteps of Julia Roberts when she stars in season two of the hit web series "Homecoming." Janelle has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including eight Grammy award nominations to date.
