April 10 marks the 50th Anniversary of Paul McCartney's bombshell announcement that he was leaving The Beatles, effectively ending the most successful group in the history of popular music. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison were schoolboys when they began to play rock & roll in the group that would eventually become The Beatles. They honed their skills in the coffee bars of Liverpool and the nightclubs of Hamburg, becoming a quartet with drummer Ringo Starr along the way. The Beatles first hit the U.K charts in late 1962. Within two years, the group was a global music and cultural phenomenon. The band's success was unprecented: movies, merchandise and the most innovative music of alltime made the "Fab Four" the most famous young men on the planet. But by the end of the decade, business pressures, musical difference and life in a fishbowl had taken a toll. The Beatles had grown up, grown apart.. and in 1970, the world's front pages carried Paul McCartney's statment on the group's breakup. All four went on to enjoy hugely successful solo careers, though, sadly, Lennon and Harrison are no longer with us. But the music lives on. Lennon and McCartney are the most successful songwriters of al ltime, and with sales in excess of a billion, The Beatles are the best-selling artists in history.
