Michael Stipe Born in Decatur, Georgia, on January 4, 1960, Michael Stipe teamed up with fellow University of Georgia students Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry to form R.E.M. in 1980 named for the "Rapid Eye Movement" stage of the sleep cycle R.E.M became a success on the "alternative" circuit, thanks to constant touring and the support of college radio. Mainstream success came with the 1987 top-10 hit "The One I Love" the band went on to sign a major label deal and hit the charts in 1989 with "stand" In 1994, "Monster" topped the album charts. The band's first tour in sox years was beset by health problems- "Berry suffered a brain aneurysm and both Mills and Stipe underwent surgery for minor ailments. The band's seventh album 1997's "Out Of Time" topped the charts on both sides of the atlantic, selling 18 million copies worldwide and spawning such hits as "Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People" The album earned R.E.M seven grammy nominations. 1992's multiplatinum "Automatic For The People" produced another string of hits including "Everybody Hurts." The band signed a new record deal, reportedly worth a staggering $80 million. in 1996, the following year, Bill Berry left on amicable terms and R.E.M continued as a trio, subsequent output met with mixed critical and commercial success R.E.M was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 before disbanding in 2011. October saw Michael Stipe jump back into the musical Friday, unveiling the single "Your Capricious Soul," his first-ever solo release.
