Having formed as Warsaw in the northwest of England in 1976, they renamed themselves, JOY DIVISION, self-releasing the debut EP "AN IDEAL for lIving" In 1978. 2019 marks 40 years since the release of "Unknown pleasures" The first album by the hugely Influential Quartet. Produced by Martin Hannett, the album's dark sound - complemented by an iconic Peter Saville sleeve design - established the band as post-punk pioneers. But the group's burgeoning success throughout Europe was married by the deteriorating health of frontman Ian Curtis. His personal life was in turmoil, and he was also taking strong medication prescribed to combat the increasingly frequent epileptic attacks he was suffering both on and offstage. In May 1980, on the eve of the band's first US tour the 23 years old singer took his own life. Following the release of the haunting album “closer Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris – recruited Gillian Gilbert on keyboards and resurfaced as New Order. Embracing dance rhythms and electronic instrumentation. They spearheaded a new direction for indie music enjoying huge worldwide success in the process, New Order and bassist hook parted company.IN 2007, but both continue to tour the world celebrating the legacy of Joy Division and New Order. Based on a book by Ians widow and starring sam riley as the tragic singerm the moive “control” premiered to rave reviews at the 2007 cannes film festival. It followed on the heels of the 2002 movie “24 hour party people” whih recounted the early days of Factory records and Joy divisons transition to New order, Although Joy divison only acjieved moderate success at the time , the bands impact on music cannot ve overstated and U2 , George micheal, the smashing pumpkins and Interpol are just a few who have cited the band as a major inspiration.
