Born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore in Oakland, California, on February 16, 1974, Mahershala Ali was known as Hershal Gilmore back when he was playing on the Mt. Eden high basketball team. His skills on the court earned him a scholarship to Saint Mary's College of California. But by the time he graduated, he had been bitten by the acting bug. He studied with the California Shakespeare into the NYU graduate acting program. He converted to Islam in 2000. His first break was the role of Dr. Try Sanders on TV's "Crossing Jordan" and he went on to land recurring roles on "Threat Matrix" and "The 4400" movie credits included "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." "Crossing Over" "The Place Beyond The Pines" and "Predators." Having enjoyed recurring toles on "Treme" and the sci-fi drama "Alphas" he was cast as Remy Danton, the lobbyist who becomes white house chief of staff, on "House of Cards." he played Boggs in "The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay-Part 1" and its sequel, and starred as Cornell "Cottonmouth" stokes on the Netflix TV series "Marvel's Luke Cage." His portrayal of Juan, the drug dealer who becomes a father figure to main protagonist Chiron in 2016's acclaimed "Moonlight" saw Mahershala become the first muslim to win an Academy Award for acting. His role in last year's film "Green Book" is garnering more awards glory. He can currently be seen starring as Detective Wayne Hays in the latest season of "True Detective" and he has a leading role in the new sci-fi action movie "Alita: Battle Angel."
