2019: Milestones in Music This week, we look at some of the major milestones and anniversaries in music that will be reached in 2019. 100 Years: Pianist and singer Nat King Cole was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1919. He sold 50 million records in a stellar career that saw him become the first black artist to host a series on American TV. He died of lung cancer in 1965. A U.S. postage stamp bearing his likeness was issued in 1994. He was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2000. 90 years: Berry Gordy Jr. was born in Detroit in 1929. He founded the legendary Motown record label in 1959. 80 Years: Among the rock legends born in 1939 are Tina Turner and the late Marvin Gaye, who was shot dead by his own father in 1984. 70 Years: Bruce Springsteen was born in 1949. His honors include 20 Grammys, two golden gloves, an Oscar and a Tony Award! 60 Years: In February 1959, Rock-and-roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. The Big Bopper Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson. 50 Years: Among the stars born in 1969 are Jay-Z, Ice Cube, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani and Marilyn Manson. 1969 was the year that 27 year old Brian Jones drowned, just weeks after leaving The Rolling Stones. 40 Years: Killed in a 2001 plane crash, singer, actress and model Aaliyah would have turned 40 in 2019. 30 Years: Taylor Swift turns 30 in 2019. 20 Years: In 1999, the charts worldwide were dominated by Britney Spears and her debut "...Baby One More Time." 10 Years: 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Michael Jackson, who passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 50.
