King Kong conceived and created by filmmaker Merian C. Cooper, the most famous ape in movie history debuted in the 1933 film "King Kong" starring Fay Wray as a damsel in distress Ann Darrow, the movie employed groundbreaking special effects and animation techniques. Its success at the box office convinced the studio to rush out a sequel, "Son Of Kong" that same year. The 1960s brought two Japanese movies that featured the beast- "King Kong Vs. Godzilla" which was the first time that king had appeared onscreen in color, and "King King Escapes." The original movie was remade in 1976 with a cast that included Jessica Lange in her first screen role. The film was a big box-office success. The climax of the 1933 original saw King Climb to the top of the New York's Empire State building and do battle with helldiver warplanes. The 1976 movie used the twin towers of the world trade center. Ten years later, the storyline was continued in the sequel "King Kong Lives" which was also known as "King Kong 2" it was panned by critics and ignored by the public. The legend was revisited in 2005. Helmed by "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy director Sir Peter Jackson, "King Kong" starred Jack Black and Naomi Watts and featured Andy Serkis playing the title role through motion capture. The most recent movie in the canon, 2017's "Kong: Skull Island" will be followed in 2020 by "Godzilla vs Kong." 85 years since he first terrorized "The Big Apple" King has returned to New York! Having enjoyed a successful run in Australia in 2013, the musical "King Kong" opens on Broadway in November, following a month of previews. The star of the show is a 20-foot-fall, 2,000 pound miracle of the latest innovation in puppetry and animatronics.
