Born Richard Starkey in Liverpool, England, on July 7, 1940, he adopted the stage name Ringo Starr after he started to play drums in local skiffle and rock bands. Having met The Beatles in 1960 in Hamburg Germany, he was recruited to the lineup two years later when the group secured a record deal. John, Paul, George, and Ringo became the most famous young men on earth, changing the face of popular music and spearheading a cultural revolution. In 1965, the boys were awarded MBE Medals by Britain's Queen Elizabeth III, and when the group disbanded in 1970. The story was front-page news around the world. Ringo released a series of solo albums, and he topped the singles chart with the hits "Photograph" and "You're Sixteen." His business ventures included his own record label and a furniture design company. Having received acclaim for his acting ability in The Beatles' films "Help!" and "A Hard Day's Night" he appeared in a number of movies, including "Candy" "The Magic Christian" "That'll Be The Day" and "Son of Dracula" he also made his directorial debut on the 1972 Marc Bolan and T. Rex documentary "Born To Boogie." In the mid-1980s he narrated the children's tv series "Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends." And starred as Mr. Conductor on the spin-off series "Shining Time Station." His first marriage ended in divorce in 1975, having produced three children (including Zak Starkey, who has been the drummer with The Who since 1996). The oldest Beatle, and the first to become a grandfather Ringo married actress Barbara Bach in 1981, the two having met on the set of the movie "Caveman." He has continued to play concerts with his all-star band. A two-tie rock and roll hall of fame inductee, he became Sir Richard Starkey this year when he was knighted by Prince William.
