Antonio Banderas was born in Malaga, Spain, on August 10, 1960. After a broken foot ended his teenage dreams of becoming a professional soccer player, he became interested in acting, and he studied the classics at Malaga's College of Dramatic Art before joining the Spanish National Theatre. He first gained international fame for his work for acclaimed director Pedro Almodovar, who cast him in numerous Spanish films. Antonio made his Hollywood debut in 1992's "The Mambo Kings." As he could speak no English at that time, he had to learn his lines phonetically, he soon mastered the language and landed starring roles in movies as diverse as "Philadelphia." "Interview With The Vampire" "Assassins" and "Desperado." He earned Golden Globe nominations for "Evita" and "The Mask Of Zorro," And the new millennium saw him star in a number of movie franchises: Besides reprising his "EL Mariachi" character in "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" the sequel to "Desperado" and starred in the "Spy Kids" and "Shrek" series of films, including the "Puss In Boots" spin-offs. Hist first marriage ended in 1996, the same year he wed his "Two Much" co-star Melanie Griffith. The couple, who have a daughter together, divorced in 2015. Antonio's performance on the Broadway stage in "Nine" brought awards acclaim, and he earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for the tv movie "and starring Pancho Villa as himself." He reunited with director Almodovar in 2011 for the thriller "The Skin I Live In." Subsequent credits have ranged from "The Expendables 3" to "The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water" and more recently he has starred in American, British, Spanish and Russian-made indie movies. He can currently been seen sporting a drastic change of image as he portrays the artist Pablo Picasso on National Geographic's "Genius" series.
