Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California, on October 25, 1984, the middle child of two pastors, she grew up listening to Gospel Music and singing in Church. She released her first CD, the Christian Gospel album "Katy Hudson" in 2001. Moving to Los Angeles, she adopted the name Katy Perry and worked wiht a number of producers, including Glenn Ballard, who is famed for his work with Alanis Morissette. Although the collaboration yielded a track, "Simple" that made it onto the soundtrack of 2005's "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" it failed to kickstar her career. In 2007, she signed to Capitol Records, a well-received debut EP was followed in 2008, by "I Kissed A Girl" the first single from her album "One of the Boys." A global smash, it was the 1,000th U.S. chart-topping song of the rock era. Her star continued to rise, thanks to such hits "Hot N Cold." A short-lived marriage to comedian Russell Brand ended in divorce in 2012. Katy's third album, the No. 1 hit "Teenage Dream." confirmed her superstar status. It was the first album by a female artist to spawn five chart-topping singles including "California Gurls." "Teenage Dream" and "Firework." Her fourth album "Prism" propelled by the hits "Roar" and "Dark Horse" topped the U.S. album charts, as did her fifth, 2017's "Witness." A global superstar, she has sold more than 100 million records to date. Her world tours have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars, and she was the first artist with multiple videos to reach 1 billion views on online platform Vevo! This weekend sees Katy debut as a judge on the revived "American Idol" tv show.
