Born in Gibson City, Illinois, on June 23, 1957, Frances McDormand was adopted at the age of 18 months. Her adoptive father was a pastor, and the family lived in Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee before settling in Monessen, Pennsylvania. She graduated from West Virginia's Bethany college in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theater. Early credits included the movies "Blood Simple" "Crimewave" and "Raising Arizona" and recurring roles on "Hill Street Blues" and "Leg Work" her breakthrough came in 1988's "Mississippi Burning," a role that earned her an Oscar nomination. Frances has been married to director Joel Coen since 1984 and has frequently appeared in movies directed by the Coen Brothers, Ethan and Joel, including "Barton Fink" "The Hudsucker Proxy" "Burn After Reading" and "Hail, Caesar!" Their 1996 collaboration, "Fargo," earned her the Academy Award her best actress. She garnered Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for 2001's "Almost Famous" and 2006s "North Country." Her work on Broadway in 2011 in the play "Good People" earned her a Tony Award. When she won a primetime Emmy for HBO's "Olive Kitteridge," she became the 12th actress in history to achieve the triple crown of acting for Oscar, Tony and Emmy awards in competitive categories. Frances, whose roles in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is bringing further awards acclaim, also has a lighter side, having voiced roles on "The Simpsons" and such movies as "The Good Dinosaur." Later this month, she can be heard voicing a character on the aimated movie "Isle of Dogs"
