Born in West Bromwich, England, on August 20, 1948, Robert Plant began singing in various bands in his teens. In 1968, when guitarist Jimmy Page of The Yardbirds needed to find musicians to complete tour dates in Scandinavia. He recruited 19-year-old Plant, who recommended drummer John Paul Jones on bass, the lineup of The New Yardbirds was complete. They soon changed the band's name to Led Zeppelin. The 196 release of their eponymous debut album, which was recorded in just two weeks, is widely considered to be the birth of the heavy metal genre! A string of chart-topping albums made Led Zeppelin the biggest concert draw in the world in the early 1970s. And their fusion of blues and rock spawned a host of pale imitations. But at the height of their success, fate seemed to conspire against them. Plant and his wife were badly injured in car crash in Greece in 1975. Two years later, their young son died from a respiratory infection. Then in 1980, John Bonham's wild lifestyle finally took its toll, and the 32-year-old drummer died in his sleep. Saddened and dispirited, the remaining members called, the remaining members called it a day, and Led Zeppelin was disbanded. The band had reunited on Occasion, most notably at Live Aid in 1985, and Plant has collaborated with Page on numerous projects, including recording together in The Honeydrippers. Plant has enjoyed success as a solo artist, recorded and performed with bluegrass star Alison Krauss and played the bands Priory Of Brion, Strange Sensation and Band of Joy. He is currently on tour in the U.S. with his band sensational Led Zeppelin has sold more than 300 million albums worldwide.
