Born on February 14, 1978, In Grinnel, Iowa, Danai Gurira spent much of her childhood in her parents' native Zimbabwe. she returned to the States to study at Macalester College in Minnesota, where she gained a bachelor of arts in psychology. She went on to earn a master of fine arts in acting from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She first found success as the co-writer and co-lead of the off-broadway play "in the Continuum" which brought her multiple awards recognition. She earned much acclaim for her subsequent work on the New Tork stage while making inroads on a screen career. TV roles included appearances on such shows as "Law and Order" and "Lie to Me" and her movie credits have ranged from Ricky Gervais comedy "Ghost Town" to the acclaimed drama "Mother of George" a film that brought her further awards recognition. Following a recurring role on the HBO series "Treme," she received her big break when she was cast as the Katina-wielding Michonne on the hugely popular Zombie TV series" The Walking Dead" Rolling Stone magazine has ranked Michonne as the best character on the show, and the role has earned Danai a huge fan base. Away from "The Walking Dead" her movie work ranged from voicing a fairy named Fury in "Tinker Bell and the Legend of the Neverbeast" to portraying Tupac Shakur's mother in the biopic "All Eyez on Me" She has continued to perform on the New York stage and has won multiple awards as a playwright for the acclaimed "Eclipsed." Next year will see Danai star in the marvel cinematic universe when she plays Okoye in the movies "Black Panther" and "Avengers: Infinity War."
