Born in Autlande Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico, on July 20, 1947, Carlos Santana spent his early years in Tijuana. He was taught violin and guitar at an early age by his Dad, a mariachi musician. In 1961, when the family relocated to San Francisco, Carlos stayed behind in Tijuana to continue working as a musician. When he eventually joined his family in the bay area, the teenage Carlos worked as a dishwasher after leaving high school. He made inroads on the local music scene, his innovative guitar technique attracting lots of attention. He formed The Santana Blues Band in 1966. By the time the group signed to Columbia Records, the name had been shortened to Santana. The group was catapulted to Stardom in 1969, when promoter Bill Graham insisted that Santana appear at Woodstock. When the band's eponymous debut album was released a few weeks later, it hit No. 4 on the U.S. albums chart. Subsequent hits included the albums "Abraxas," "Santana III," "Caravanserai," "Amigos" and "Moonflower." gradually, sales declined, and eventually the band went on hiatus. The group was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 1998. The following year, Santana released the album "Supernatural" which sold 30 million copies worldwide, won nine Grammy's and earned diamond status by ging 15X platinum. Since the resurgence, Santana has continued to tour and enjoy chart success. In 2013, Carlos became a Kennedy Center honoree. This summer, he celebrated his 70th birthday and this winter, Santana will be a fixture in Las Vegas at the house of Blues at Mandalay Bay.
