This week marked the 20th anniversary of the death of the "People's Princess" Diana Frances Spencer was born on July 1, 1961. Descended from a family with close links to the British Throne, many of them romantic and frequently scandalous, she became Lady Diana when her father inherited the title Earl Spencer in 1975 and moved the family to althrop, their elegant home and country estate. As a child, Diana was a playmate of the Royal Family's offspring. At boarding school, friends teased her about her Royal Connections and constantly linked her wiht Prince Andrew. But it was a poster of Prince Charles-13 years her senior- that adorned the wall above her bed. Undistinguished academically, she left school at 17 and moved into a London at 17 and moved into a London Apartment. To earn money, she babysat for a number of clients and worked as a daily maid for her sister. In 1980, her romance with Prince-Charles catapulted 19-year-old Diana into the headlines. On July 29, 1981, five months after announcing their engagement, they married in St. Paul's Cathedral, watched by an estimated worldwide TV audience of 750 million people! The shy young teen was soon transformed into one of the most glamorous- and certainly most photographed - women in the world. But although the marriage produced Princes William and Harry, it quickly deteriorated. Departing in 1992, the couple divorced in 1996. Under a constant media glare, Diana continued her charitable and humanitarian work. Her death in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997. Unleashed an unprecedented outpouring of grief. Her funeral brought Britian to a halt and was watched by an estimated 2.5 billion people around the world.
