Whitney Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 9, 1963. her mother, soul and gospel singer Cissy Houston, worked as a backing vocalist with many of the biggest stars in music, including Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendriz, David Bowie and Paul Simon. Whitney followed in her Mom's footsteps, singing backup for a number of artists, including Chaka Kan on the 1978 hit "I'm Every Woman" Her first two albums, 1985s "Whitney Houston" and the 1987 follow-up "Whitney" sold more than 45 million copies between them and spawned a parade of chart-topping singles, including "Saving All My Love For You" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me). She made her movie debut in 1992s "The Bodyguard" opposite Kevin Costner. The soundtracks lead single "I Will Always Love You" became one of the biggest hits of all time, topping the U.S. charts for 14 weeks! Also in 1992, Whitney married R&B bad boy Bobby Brown. Their daughter Bobby Kristina was born in 1993. Whitney starred in two more movies- "Waiting To Exhale" and "The Preacher's Wife" and continued to rack up hit singles and albums. But by the end of the decade, it was apparent that a decadent lifestyle was taking a toll. Her career stalled under the weight of her personal struggles. Following her 2007 divorce, she made a number of attmpts to get back on track- but in February 2012, she was found dead in Beverly Hlls Hotel. She was 48 years old. The family was further rocketed by the tragic death of Whitney's 22-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina in 2015. The stellar career and sad demise of the seven-time Grammy winner is the subject of the new documentary "Whitney: Can I Be Me" currently airing on Showtime.
