Idrissa Akuna Elba was born in London on September 6, 1972, the only child of a Sierra Leonean father and a Ghanaian mother. Idris left school for a place in the national youth music theatre, supplementing his income by working as a nightclub deejay under the name "Big Driis The Londoner." starting with a bit parts on the likes of "Absolutely Fabulous" and "The Bill" he rose to prominence on British TV, eventually starring in the horror series "Ultraviolet" and landing a recurring role on Dangerfield." Relocating to the states, he got his big break when he was cast as Russell "Stringer" Bell on the HBO drama series "The Wire" subsequent tv roles ranged from "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" to seven episodes of "The Office" his film work included "Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls" the zombie movie "28 Weeks Later" and "American Gangster." After starring opposite Beyonce Knowles in 2009's "Obsessed" he gained a legion of fans on both sides of the Atlantic with the lead in the BBC detective series "Luter" a role that earned him a Golden Globe Award! He made his first appearance as Norse God Heimdall in 2011's "Thor" and starred as Moreau in "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance." Following the big-budget epics "Prometheus" and "Pacific Rim" he portrayed Nelson Mandela in 2013's"Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom" His acclaimed role in the harrowing "Beasts of No Nation" was counterbalanced by voice work in "The Jungle Book" "Zootopia " and "Finding Dory/" In 2016, he played Krall in "Star Trek Beyond" Idris-who broke a land speed record and plotted a plane on his discovery channel show "Idris Elba: No limits" has a slate for 2017 that includes a fourth outing as Heimdall in "Thor Ragnarok." a starring role in "The Dark Tower" which is based on the Stephen King novels, "Mollys Game" with Jessica Chastain and "The Mountain Between Us" with Kate Winslet.
