Back in the early 1980s when he went by the name Ian Lindsay and sported full native American regalia and a mohawk haircut, Ian Astbury was the frontman for U.K. punk banc Southern Death Cult. When that group folded, Ian joined forces with guitarist Billy Duffy, a veteran of a number of punk outfits, including The Nosebleeds, where he played alongside singer Morrissey, who subsequently teamed up with Johnny Marr to form The Smiths. The new group started life as Death Cult, but by 1984, they had whittled the name down to The Cult. In 1985, they hit the U.K. charts with the singles "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Rain" constant worldwide touring paid dividends, and the band's "Electric" and "Sonic Temple" albums went platinum in the U.S. on the single "Fire Woman" peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks Chart. As is often the case, success magnified internal tensions. Matters came to a head on a 1995 south American tour, following which The Cult disbanded. Four years later, Duff and Astbury formed The Cult, embarked on a sold-out U.S. tour played dates worldwide and released the album"Beyond Good and Evil."
