John Legend was born John Roger Stephens in Springfield, Ohio, on December 28, 1978. At the age of four, he performed with his church choir, and by the age of seven, he had started to play piano. While attending the university of Pennsylvania, he served as president and musical director of a co-ed jazz and pop A Copella group called Counterparts. He also began making inroads into the music business, playing piano on a track on a Lauryn Hill album and building a fanbase through his concerts. His big break came when he signed to Kanye's West's good music label in 2003. He adopted the stage name John Legend and was featured on tracks by such artists as Kanye, Britney Spears and will.i.am his 2004 debut album, "Get Lifted" was certified platinum and helped earn him three grammy awards. He has subsequently carved out a stellar career that has earned him six more Grammys. He has topped the Billboard singles chart, collaborated with everyone from Sergio Mendes to Jay Z and performed at the superbowl. He married his girlfriend of six years, mode Chrissy Teigen, in 2003. Two years later, the couple announced they were expecting the birth of their first child. He teamed up with rapper Common to write the song "Glory" for the 2014 movie "Selma." it won the best original song Golden Globe and Oscar and John and Common performed it live on stage at the 87th Academy Awards. Legend is a noted philanthropist and serves on the boards of numerous charitable organizations.
