2016: Milestones in Music: This week, we look at some of the major milestones and anniversaries in music that will be reached in 2016. 90 Years: Rock 'n' Roll pioneer Chuck Berry was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1926. A gifted songwriter, innovative guitarist and electrifying performer, he shaped the sound of popular music with such classics as "Rock and Roll music" "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Johnny B. Goode." Among the artists who cite Berry as a major influence are The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. 80 Years: Born in Lubbock, Texas, in 1936, Buddy Holly cemented his place in music legend with such classics as "That'll Be The Day" and "Peggy Sue." He was only 22 years old when he was killed inthe plane crash that also claimed the lives of fellow pop stars Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. 70 Years: Among those who will celebrate their 70th birthdays in 2016 are Cher, David Gilmour, of Pink Floyd and last surviving Bee Gee, Barry Gibb. Had they lived, Keith Moon of The Who and Queen's Freddie Mercury would have celebrated 70th birthdays in 2016, as would Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barett. 60 Years" In 1956, "Heartbreak Hotel" gave Elvis Presley his first chart-topping single. 1956 was also the year that Elvis signed on with the manager who would shape his career, Colonel Tom Parker. 50 Years: 2016 marks a half-century since the release of "Hey Joe" the first single by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Within a year, Jimi was one of the hottest stars in rock. 40 Years: Four decades ago, a band of uncouth upstarts were in the vanguard of a movement that was shaking up the entire music business. Punk trailblazers The Sex Pistols released their debut single "Anarchy In The U.K." in 1976. 30 Years: Lady Gaga was born Stefani Germanotta in 1986. This year will also see Drake, Ellie Goulding and Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine all turn 30. 20 Years: Two decades ago, "Girl Power" ruled the airwaves! The Spice Girls burst onto the pop scene in 1996 with the smash hit "Wannabe." 10 Years: Ten years ago, the one-billionth song downloaded on iTunes was named "Speed Of Sound" by Coldplay. By 2013, the downloaded total had reached 25 billion!
