Formed by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987, Nirvana had a succession of drummers before Dave Grohl was recruited in 1990. Having enjoyed indie label success with its debut album, 1989's "Bleach" Nirvana signed to a major label and released "Nevermind" in 1991. Propelled by the success of the hit single "Smells Like Teen Spirit," The album topped the U.S. charts and introduced the world to the alternative rock genre known as "Grunge." "In Utero" debuted at the top of the Billboard Album charts upon its release in late 1993 and was followed by the trio's triumphant "MTV Unplugged" concert- but success was tempered by internal wrangling and label conflicts, and was rushed to the hospital. The fears that were mounting over his lifestyle and state of mind proved tragically well-founded. On April 8, 1994, he was found dead at his Seattle home. He was 27 years old. Nirvana ended with Cobain's death. Both Novoselic and Grohl have continued to make music, with the latter enjoying huge worldwide success as the frontman of his chart-topping band, The Foo Fighters. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, Nirvana- with the sales of 75 million records to date- remains one of the most influential bands of all time.
