Biographic Steve McGarry Uma Thurman Born on April 29, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts, Uma Karuna Thurman lived in India for two years during her teens. The daughter of a University professor and a model of Scandinavian descent, Uma later attended the professional Children's School in Manhattan and was a professional model by the age of 15. She broke into movies with four films in the late 1980s - the teen comedy "Johnny Be Good," the Indie thriller "Kiss Daddy Goodnight," the Terry Gilliam fantasy "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and the acclaimed hit "Dangerous Liasons." Uma wed actor Gary Oldman in 1990, although the marriage was short-lived and ended in divorce two years later. Her star continued to rise throughout the early 1990s, thanks to roles as diverse as Helena Robertson in "Jennifer 8" and Maid Marian in the TV movie "Robin Hood." She starred opposite Robert de Niro in "Mad Dog and Glory" and took the lead in 1994's "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues." 1994 was also the year she starred in the Quentin Tarantino pop culture classic "Pulp Fiction," which earned Uma an Oscar nomination. she went on to star as Poison Ivy in "Batman & Robin" and Emma Peel in "The Avengers," among other roles, and won a Golden Globe for the TV movie "Hysterical Blindness," before Tarantino created his two "Kill Bill" movies around her. Subsequent credits included "Be Cool" and "The Accidental Husband." She earned an Emmy nomination for her five-episode stint on the TV musical drama "Smash." A mother of three, including two children from her seven-year marriage to Ethan Hawke, her "Gattaca" co-star, she has recently been linked romantically in the media to Quentin Tarantino.
