Biographic Steve McGarry Patrick Stewart Born in Yorkshire, England, on July 13, 1940, Patrick Stewart was still in his teens when he lost his hair. He threw himself into an acting career to help overcome his timidity and became a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company, beginning a relationship that continues to this day. He also worked extensively in British TV and began to make inroads into film. During a dramatic reading at UCLA, Stewart was spotted by TV producer Robert H. Justman, who earmarked him for the role of Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the USS Enterprise on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Stewart had no idea that "Star Trek: the Next Generation" would become such a huge success. The show made him wealthy, but he was typecast, and while he was able to undertake numerous theater projects during its seven-season run, he found that his movie prospects outside of the "Star Trek" films were limited. He enjoyed much success with TV movies and miniseries, including "A Christmas Carol," "Moby Dick" and "The Lion in Winter." Movie stardom came with the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the "X-men" series of blockbuster movies. In addition to his prolific stage work, he continues to be much in demand as a voice actor and has lent his stentorian tones to multiple animated projects, from his recurring role on "American Dad" to such movies as "Gnomeo and Juliet." Sir Patrick Stewart was knighted in 2010 for his services to drama.
