Biographic Steve McGarry U2 The band U2 was formed in Dublin, Ireland, in the late 1970s, when a gaggle of schoolboys from Mount Temple Comprehensive School - singer Paul Hewson, guitarist Dave "The Edge" Evans, Bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. - met in Larry's kitchen to rehearse. Inspired by a sign form a hearing aid, they nicknamed their singer Bono Vox, which roughly translates from Latin as "Good Voice." After building a fervent local following, the band signed to an English Record label in 1980. Through the albums "Boy," "October," "War" and "The Unforgettable Fire," compelling concert performances and heavy rotation on MTV, U2 became one of rock's hottest new bands. The group's performance at 1985's "Live Aid" concert, broadcast to more than a billion people worldwide, propelled the quartet to superstar status. In 1987, "The Joshua Tree" topped album charts around the world, spawning such hits as "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." U2 packed stadiums on a tour that was recorded for the "Rattle and Hum" album and documentary. Throughout the '90s, U2 stayed at the forefront of music innovation, with albums such as "Achtung Baby," "Zooropa" and "Pop," and the ambitious "Zoo TV" and "Popmart" tours. When 2004's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" album debuted at No. 1 in 24 countries, U2 cemented its status as the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world. The following year, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their 2009-2011 U2 360* tour was the highest-attended and highest-grossing concert tour in history. To date, the band has sold more than 150 million records!
