BIOGRAPHIC Steve McGarry Kevin Spacey Born in South Orange, New Jersey, on July 26, 1959, Kevin Spacey Fowler was raised in southern California. He originally wanted to be a stand-up comedian, and performed in stand-up comedy contests while studying drama at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. After making his first professional stage appearance as a spear carrier in a New York Shakespeare Festival production of "Henry VI, Part One," he rose to prominence on the Broadway stage, while racking up credits with roles in such TV shows as "Crime Story" and "The Equalizer," culminating with a recurring role on the 1988 TV series "Wiseguy." The likes of "The Ref," "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "Swimming with Sharks" cemented his fast-growing reputation. 1995 was a stellar year for Spacey - he gave a chilling portrayal of the evil killer John Doe in "Seven," joined a stellar cast in the disaster movie "Outbreak," and earned the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in "The Usual Suspects." He followed up with major roles in "A Time to Kill," "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" and "L.A. Confidential." He earned the best actor Oscar for 1999's "American Beauty," and won the Laurence Olivier Award for his performance in the play "The Iceman Cometh." He has played roles as diverse as singer Bobby Darin in the biopic "Beyond the Sea" and the villainous Lex Luthor in "Superman Returns." He has racked up multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, his production company has turned out an impressive list of successes, and since 2003 he has been the artistic director of London's fabled Old Vic Theatre. In 2010, Kevin Spacey was invested as a commander of the British Empire for his services to Drama. Most recently, his "House of Cards" series on Netflix has been hailed as a triumph.
