Biographic Steve McGarry Bruce Springsteen Born on September 23, 1949, Bruce Springsteen was raised in Freehold, New Jersey. At the age of 16, he joined local band The Castiles and went on to perform in the New Jersey area with a trio called Earth, before playing in the band Steel Mill. He signed a solo record deal in 1972, and his debut album, "Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J," was released in 1973 to strong critical acclaim. It was followed later that same year by his second album, "The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle." He established a reputation as one of the most exciting performers in rock, with his epic shows, featuring his legendary E Street Band, running hours in length. It was his third album, 1975's "Wall of Sound" classic "Born to Run," that made Bruce a superstar. He appeared on the covers of both "Newsweek" and "Time," and artists from Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Patti Smith enjoyed huge hits with covers of his songs. Bruce's 1980 album, "The River," with its hit single "Hungry Heart," was followed by the stark "Nebraska." In 1984, "Born in the U.S.A." gave him his greatest commercial success. The album sold 15 million copies and yielded a string of hits. A subsequent live album sold an amazing 13 million units. The 1990s found Bruce living in Los Angeles and raising a family with second wife Patti Scialfa, a singer in his band. "Streets of Philadelphia," his haunting contribution to the 1993 movie "Philadelphia," earned him an Academy Award and the first of four Grammys to come. Bruce was inducted into the rock and roll Hall of Fame in 1999. "The Rising," his response to the 9/11 attacks, was a critical and commercial triumph in 2002, and his 2005 release, "Devils and Dust," debuted at No.1 in the U.S. and nine other countries. Following an album of covers of songs made popular by folk singer Pete Seeger, Bruce's last three albums have topped the charts worldwide. Despite the deaths of stalwarts Danny Federici and Clarence Clemons, Bruce and the E Street Band continue to tour the world. January 2014 sees the release of Bruce's 18th studio album, "High Hopes."
