Has it really been 60 years since a teenage Elvis Presley exploded onto the music scene and changed popular culture forever? Has a half-century passed since four young lads from Liverpool spearheaded the British Best Invasion and captivated an entire country? 2014 sees the anniversary of some major milsetones in music history. This week, we reflect on just a few... 70 Years Songs such as "In The Mood" and "Moonlight Serenad" made big band orchestra leader Glenn Miller one of the most popular recording artists of the World War II years. In 1944, while flying from Britain to France to entertain the troops, his aircraft disappeared over the English Channel. He was Posthumously awarded a Bronze Star Medal. in 1996, the U.S. Postal Service Issued a Glenn Miller Stamp. 60 Years In July 1954, during a trial recording session in a Memphis Studio, 19-year-old truck driver Elvis Presley launched into an impromptu version of "That's All Right" - and altered the course of popular music. Within two years, Elvis was the worldwide king of rock'n'roll. 50 years Beatlemania swept America when "the Fab Four" visited the states for the first time in early 1964. A record 73 million viewers - 40% of the population - watched The Beatles' U.S. TV debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show." The group soon made chart history by occupying the top five spots on the billboard hot 100 chart! 40 Years Swedish quartet ABBA won the 1974 Eurovision song contest with the song "Waterloo." A huge hit worldwide, it set them on the path to become one of the best-selling acts of all time. British rockers Queen toured the U.S. for the first time - opening for Mott the Hoople! 30 Years Madonna's career went supernova with the release of her second album, 1984's "Like a Virgin." The record sold 21 million copies worldwide, propelled by the singles "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl." That same year, the "Purple Rain" movie and soundtrack album made 26-year-old Prince a global superstar! 20 Years In 1994, Pink Floyd embarked on what would prove to be the band's final tour. Playing to a record-breaking 5.5 million people in 68 cities and grossing a staggering $250 million! 1994 was also the year that rock fans mourned the death of 27-year-old Kurt Cobain, frontman with the Seattle grunge pioneers Nirvana. 10 Years The charts were dominated by Usher in 2004. His fourth studio album, "Confessions," sold 1.1 million copies in its first week of release and spawned four consecutive U.S. chart-topping singles.
