BIOGRAPHIC Steve McGarry Ethan Hawke Born in Austin, Texas, on November 6, 1970, Ethan Hawke attended high school in New Jersey, which is where he developed and interest in acting. He made his screen debut opposite River Phoenix in 1985's "Explorers," before going on the study drama at Carnegie Mellon University. The success of 1989's "Dead Poets Society" persuaded him to take up acting full time and pursue the offers that came flooding in. His first starring role was the 1991 adaptation of the Jack London novel "White Fang." The Early 1990's saw Hawke rack up a string of credits, including the world war II movie "A Midnight Clear," the Andes survival drama "Alive," the gen x rom-com "Reality Bites" and the romantic drama "Before Sunrise." He married his "Gattaca" co-star Uma Thurman in 1998, a union that lasted six years and produced two children. (He also has two children with his second wife.) His movies ranged from a modern take on the Dickens classic "Great Expectations" to "Hamlet" before he was cast in 2001's "Training Day," a crime drama that earned Denzel Washington and Academy Award and Hawke an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. Subsequent credits included "Assault on Precinct 13," "Before the Devil Knows you're Dead" and "Daybreakers." He has written two novels, one of which, "The Hottest State," he adapted and directed for the screen. He received a screenwriting Oscar nomination for "Before Sunset," the 2004 sequel to "before Sunrise." Hawke has also acted and directed extensively on the New York stage, and dabbled in TV, most notably in the 2011 miniseries "Moby Dick." 2013 sees him star in the horror movie "The Purge," the action thriller "Getaway" and "Before Midnight" - the third installment of the "Before Sunrise" series.
