BIOGRAPHIC Steve McGarry Julian Fellowes Julian Alexander Fellowes was born in Cairo, Egypt, the son of a British diplomat, on August 17, 1949. Privately educated at a number of prestigious English schools, he attended Cambridge University, where he was a member of Footlights, the famed drama club whose alumni include some of the most famous names in British comedy. He embarked on an acting career, appearing on numerous British TV shows, before trying his luck in Hollywood in the early 1980s. Having written romantic novels under a pseudonym in the 1970s, he turned his hand to scriptwriting in the 1990s - and won an Academy Award for his screenplay to 2001's "Gosford Park." Subsequent movie writing credits included an adaption of "Vanity Fair" and his screenplay for "The Young Victoria." In 2010, his original series "Downton Abbey" first aired. It has gone on to become one of the most-watched series on PBS, while earning a plethora of awards. In 2011, Julian was made a life peer in the House of Lords, the Upper House of British Parliament, taking the title "Baron Fellowes of West Stafford. Having so far earned a record-setting 27 prime-time Emmy Award nominations, "Downton Abbey" returns to U.S. screens for a third season in January.
