Biographic Steve McGarry Lucy Liu Lucy Alexis Liu was born in Queens, New York, on December 2, 1968. Her parents had emigrated from China, and Lucy didn't speak English until she was 5 years old. She became interested in acting while attending the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. After graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Asian Languages and Cultures, she moves to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film and television. Having landed a small role on "Beverly Hills, 90210," she quickly gained more TV exposure, with credits ranging from "L.A. Law" and ER" to lighter fare such as "Coach" and Home Improvement," and from the sci-fi of "the X-Files" to "Hercules: The legendary Journeys." She also appeared in movies such as "Jerry Maguire" and "Shanghai Noon." She landed a steady TV gig in 1998 with her role as Ling Woo on "Ally McBeal." Her major breakthrough came with 2000's blockbuster "Charlie's Angels." Originally cast as a villainess, she was promoted to angel when Thandie Newton was delayed on "Mission: Impossible II." In 2003 and 2004, she went on to star in the Quentin Tarantino "Kill Bill" movies, other credits include extensive voice work, from "Kin of the Hill" to Mulan II," as well as "Kung Fu Panda" and "Disney Fairies" animated franchises. Her TV work has ranged from a recurring role on the sitcom "joey" and a couple of guest appearances on "Ugly Betty," to an award-winning stint on the cop show "Southland." After reprising her "Charlie's Angels" role in the 2003 sequel, she starred in the likes of "Lucky Number Slevin" and "Rise: Blood Hunter." After making her Broadway debut in 2010, she is currently starring with Jonny Lee Miller in the hit TV drama "Elementary," and showcased her martial arts expertise once more opposite Russell Crowe in the movie "The Man with the Iron Fists." Away from acting, her interests are varied and impressive. A dedicated activist for numerous humanitarian causes, she is also an accomplished artist - her work has been shown in galleries on both coasts - and an accordion player!
