BIOGRAPHIC Steve McGarry Martin Freeman Martin Freeman was born in Aldershot, Hampshire, England, on Septemeber 8, 1971, the youngest of five children. He was trained at London's Central School of Speech and Drama, and began to make his mark as an actor on stage and screen in the late 1990s, spearing in such U.K. TV staples as the police drama "The Bill" and the hospital soap "Casualty." Martin's big break came in 2001 when he was cast as Tim Canterbury in the Golden Globe-winning Ricky Gervais series "The Office," the groundbreaking British sitcom that spawned the smash-hit U.S. version. His movie work included roles in the ensemble rom-com "Love Actually," the Simon Pegg comdedies "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz," and the lead role of Arthur Dent in the 2005 screen adaption of the best-selling Douglas Adams comic sci-fi book "the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." TV work included starring roles in the U.K. sitcoms "Hardware" and "the Robinsons," with his portrayal of Dr. John Watson in "Sherlock," the acclaimed BBC update of the classic Sherlock Holmes detective stories, Martin earned him a Bafta Award and an Emmy nomination. Now worldwide stardom seems assured with his starring role as Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit" epic adventure trilogy, the first installment of which hits theaters this Christmas season.
