BIOGRAPHIC Written & Illustrated by Steve McGarry Follow Steve McGarry Cartoons every day on Facebook Dist. by Universal Uclick Whitney Houston Whitney Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 9, 1963, her mother, soul and gospel singer Cissy Houston, worked as a backing vocalist with many of the biggest stars in music, including Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Paul Simon. Whitney followed in her mom's footsteps, singing backup for a number of artists, including Chaka Khan on the 1978 hit "I'm Every Woman." Her first two albums, 1985's "Whitney Houston" and the 1987 follow-up, "Whitney," sold more than 45 million copies between them and spawned a parade of chart-topping singles, including "Saving All My Love For You" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)." She made her movie debut in 1992's "The Bodyguard," opposite Kevin Costner. The soundtrack's lead single, "I will Always Love You," became one of the biggest hits of all time, topping the U.S. charts for 14 weeks! Also in 1992, Whitney married R&B bad boy Bobby Brown. She gave birth to their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, In 1993. Whitney starred in two more movies - "Waiting To Exhale" and "the Preacher's Wife" - and continued to rack up hit singles and albums. But by the end of the decade, it was becoming apparent that a decadent lifestyle was taking a toll. Her career stalled under the weight of her personal struggles, following her 2007 divorce, she made a number of attempts to get back on track - but in February 2012, she was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel. The release of the the movie "Sparkle," completed just weeks before her death, represents a poignant tribute to one of the most successful and acclaimed singers in popular music history.
