Chris Martin Christopher Anthony John Martin was born in Devon, England, on March 2, 1977. He met Jonny Buckland in 1996, during their first week at University college London, and the two were soon writing songs together, classmate Guy Berryman ws recruited on bass, and finally multi-instrumentalist Guy Champion took on drum duties, although he had no drumming experience. The band's original name, Starfish, was jettisoned in favor of the name Coldplay. A couple of Indie E.P. releases sparked interest in the group, and after completing their final exams, the quartet signed to a major label. In 2000, on the heels of the hit single "Yellow" the band's first album, "Parachutes," debuted at the top of the U.K charts. IT eventually went double-platinum in the United States, earning Coldplay the 2001 best alternative music album Grammy. The second album, 2002s "A Rush of Blood To The Head," cemented that success, and by the time "X&Y" topped the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic in 2005, Coldplay was one of the biggest bands in the world. Meanwhile, Chris collaborated with artists as diverse as Nelly Furtado and Kanye West, and wrote for a number of others. He married actress Gwenyth Paltrow in 2003, and the couple now have two children. Released in 2008, and produced by the legendary Brian Eno, "Viva La Vida" or Death and all his friends" was another worldwide chart-topper- as was the band's fifth studio album, 2011's "Mylo Xyloto." To date, Coldplay has sold more than 55 million records and earned numerous awards, including seven Grammys from a total of 23 nominations.
