Kate Beckinsale was born in London, on July 26, 1973. Her mother, Judy Loe, was in the U.K cast of the hit musical "Hair" and her dad, Richard Beckinsale, was one of Briain's top Sitcom stars. The family was devastated when a heart attack claimed his life at the age of 31. Kate's subsequent stepfather, Roy Battersby, is a top tv drama director in the U.K . Although she won two prestigous awards for writing during her teens, Kate had no doubts that she would pursue an acting career. Following a number of tv parts in her late teens, she landed a leading role in Kenneth Brangh's 1993 adaptation of "Much Ado About Nothing." Her blossoming career meant that she abandoned Oxford University, where she was studying French and Russian Literature. More stage and screen work followed, until she landed her big break in the 2001 war epic "Pearl Harbor." Two years later, she starred in "Underworld" as the vampire Selene, a role that she has reprised on two occasions, with a third set for release this month. Other credits have ranged from the horror movie "Van Helsing" to "The Aviator" in which she played Ava Gardner to Leonardo DiCaprio's howard Hughes, her latest outing teams with her Mark Wahlberg in the crime thriller "Contraband" and later this year, she'll also star in remake of the Schwarzenegger hit "Total Recall."
